- Verenigde staten
A new series of my lifestyle episodes is out. In the past months I’ve released 4 new videos.
Slacklining in Gorges du Verdon with Benoit Brume (S2:E1)
This episode takes place in the gorgeous Gorges du Verdon. This area is so beautiful, it’s also the only place in Europe where vultures are being preserved. Together with my friend Benoit, we came to a fun creative idea. His nickname is Benoit Brume, the “Rider of the Fog”. The setting of the desert in the south of France reminded me of a western. And Benoit was also wearing a cowboy hat! So that combination could only lead to one outcome; A highline western. If you’re curious; check this out!
Dutchies highlining in France: Purple GAZ (S2:E2)
Together with Froukje de Klein, Jobber Moltmaker and Cor Vinke I went to a mountain looking over the valley of Grenoble. There’s an epic cliff with an overhanging rock. To that rock you can rig a monster highline; “Purple GAZ”. It’s 140m long and very exposed.. if you walk towards Grenoble, then you’ve got a view over the whole valley. It’s a pretty and a crazy highline at the same time. I used my drone to rig the highline. All of this, you can see in this video!
Freestyle highlining with Daniel Laruelle (S2:E3)
Freestyle highlining is a new thing in the slackline world. It’s about doing freestyle tricks on a highline. Super crazy, if you ask me. My friend Daniel is totally into this world. And he’s f*cking good! I was stoked to capture some of his fast rotations and also learn a little bit of this new style.
A 1.1 long km with Zeph Premoselli (S2:E4)
What should have been episode no1 turned out to be the last episode of the season. I’ve heard some friends of mine (Jobber, Pablo Traversat) were at an epic gathering of Ça March association. They were doing a 1.1 long km highline. When I arrived, Zeph Premoselli was about to hop on.. I just bought a drone and was stoked to capture his super fast walk. He inspired me so much, that I dedicated this episode to him!
During the Covid isolation time all my photography and teaching jobs got canceled.. Luckily my highline training program continued. 5 students are super stoked to slackline more and get better in slacklining. The goal is to get on a highline somewhere after the isolation time.
In this weird period I got extra time to slackline. Training time I didn’t had in a while. My creativity hormone is of course still working and my teacher brain too.. So I decided to use the time to create some slackline tutorials.
Learning how to stand up: slackline mounts
Mounting a slackline is an essential skill to get to bigger and higher lines. If you can’t mount your slackline decent, any slackline above hip height becomes an obstacle. If you can mount these lines properly; everything becomes possible. So let’s invest in our mount.
My favorite way to stand up on a slackline. Go sit with one shin on the line, other foot on top of the line. Make a momentum and go sit on one foot and one shin. It’s a bit painful in the beginning, but you’ll get used to it soon.
The classic way to stand up on a slackline. Go sit on one foot on the line, knee fully flexed. Other leg is next to the line. Lift your leg and go stand up on two legs. I don’t like the chongo mount anymore, after serving my slackline skills for 5 years, it got me injured. No again 5 years later I can do it again, but prefer not to. Make sure your upper and lower leg of your flexed leg are in one line. Otherwise you might sprain your meniscus..
Sit start / sitmount
The sit start (or sit mount) is a very stylish way to stand up. If your hip mobility is big enough, this might be your way! Go sit on your butt on the line. Two feet on the line, create a momentum and stand up!
Training ideas #1
This video is a combination of multiple tricks that are good to practice. Bouncewalking, exposure stand, sideplank and sitting on the line. These are proper ways to up your game. All are necessities for highlining. Which one is your favorite?
Recently I submitted for my first photo competition. It’s the “Olympus young talent award” by Kiekie Tabloid. Ten of the best entries are selected to be exposed in the Amsterdam Foam Museum, thé photography museum of Amsterdam.
Subject of the photo competition was “Traveling”. The biggest part of my photography portfolio contains travel pictures. The actual reason for me to travel is because I can practice my sports better abroad. So I decided to join this competition. Also because I am shooting with Olympus system cameras.
A month after signing up, I had the exciting respond that I got selected! They selected the picture I took from Pablo Traversat on the 260m highline in Sicily for the exposition.
At the exposition, my picture was hanging in the centre of the hall, fully in the spotlights. It was very cool to see people staring at my picture for like 10 minutes. And asking me all kind of questions about how this picture happened. Since the shot is kind of dark, there’s a lot of questions you’ll get when you see it on a big printed canvas. It truly came alive.
Unfortunately I didn’t win the competition (competitive as I am). But the fact that quite some individuals asked my if I was surprised that I didn’t win, gave me a big satisfaction.
The Jonas Lifestyle series is a concept/idea I brought to reality last summer. Long I’ve been thinking to share the adventurous rides I have in my van. But finally I found the way and the commitment to do this.
Jonas Lifestyle Episode 1
The Jonas Lifestyle series started during my trip to the south of Italy, Sicilia. The first episode is mostly an introduction to the Lifestyle and the way of traveling. In the first episode, I’m driving together with Daan Nieuwenhuis in direction of Rome.
Jonas Lifestyle Episode 2
In the second episode, Daan and I are driving further south. We make a longer stop south of Napoli, Amalfi. One of the most beautiful regions of southern Italy. We found a nice spot to rig a 70m highline. But almost as important in my memory of the Amalfi experience; those Lemons! Damn, they were tasty..
Jonas Lifestyle Episode 3
The third Epsisode I think is a real upgrade after the first two. The visuals and especially the story part is way improved after my first two productions. I narrated most of the story underneath the video. And I am very glad with the results 🙂
Enjoy the last Italian video of this series!
